Description

Manganese is a chemical element with atomic number 25. It is one of the important metals found as free element in combination with the iron. Manganese is also found in various other minerals. It finds several applications in metal industry especially in steel sector. Manganese is a slivery gray metal resembling iron. It is very hard, brittle, and very difficult to fuse. This metal is easily oxidized thus conveniently used in different industrial applications.

Occurrence

Manganese is 12 most abundant element found on the earth. It constitutes about .1% of the total earth crust. It naturally occurs as Pyrolusite (MnO2), Braunite (Mn2+Mn3+6)(SiO12), and Psilomelane (Ba,H2O)2Mn5O10. Economically Pyrolusite is the most important Manganese ore as it has a close spatial relation to the iron ores. India is one of the largest producers of Manganese in the world accounting about 6% of total Manganese in the world.

Use of Manganese

Manganese is high on demand for metallurgical alloy use. It is an essential for the production of Iron and steel. Its properties like sulfur-fixing, deoxidizing, and alloying make it a valuable component in iron and steel industry. Manganese increases workability of steel at high temperatures. Apart from this, Manganese is also used an alloying agent for the production of aluminium.
